Girona earns 1-1 draw against Real Madrid amid VAR controversy

MADRID: Real Madrid surrendered two crucial points in the title race but still maintained a one-point lead over second-placed Barcelona after Girona held them to a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday in LaLiga. After a goalless first half,  Vinicius Jr. opened the scoring for the home side in the 70th minute, but 10 minutes later, a penalty from Cristhian Stuani wiped out their lead. Both teams had opportunities in the first half, with Real’s Rodrygo, who was in charge of the attack in place of Karim Benzema, coming closest to scoring a goal but his shot hit the post. Real had struggled for more than an hour, but they finally found success when Federico Valverde was able to push the ball into the six-yard box where Vinicius was waiting to tap it into the nets. Stuani scored the equalizer in the 80th minute when the referee awarded Girona a penalty after a VAR check which determined that a set piece struck Marco Asensio’s arm. Rodrygo thought he had scored the winner fo...

Rizwan surpasses Kohli, achieves yet another T20I landmark

PERTH: Pakistan wicketkeeper batter Mohammad Rizwan surpassed India’s Virat Kohli in another T20I record as he became the second-fastest batter to amass 2500 runs in the format. Rizwan achieved the milestone amid his 49-run stand against the Netherlands today as he scored the 22nd run of his knock to achieve the milestone in 65 innings. India’s Kohli conceded 68 innings to score as many T20I runs, while Pakistan captain Babar Azam is the fastest to score 2,500 runs in the shortest format. Following this, Rizwan also became only the third Pakistan batter to score 2,500 runs. Former captain Mohammad Hafeez was the first to do so, followed by Babar. It is pertinent to mention that Rizwan’s sensible 49-run knock powered Pakistan to chase down 92 runs in the 14th over as Pakistan sealed their maiden triumph in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. Yadav rescues India to 133/9 despite dismal start against South Africa

PERTH: India’s hard-hitting batter Suryakumar Yadav put on a great fight with a magnificent knock of 68 to rescue his side to a competitive 133/9 in the first innings against South Africa after Lungi Ngidi decimated their top order. Batting first after winning the toss, India had a poor start to their innings as they lost half of the side for just 49 runs as captain Rohit Sharma (15), KL Rahul (9), Virat Kohli (12), Deepak Hooda (0) and Hardik Pandya (2) perished cheaply as right-arm pacer Lungi Ngidi wreaked havoc in his opening spell. Following the slump, Yadav stood up for his team and embarked on recovery for his side as he stitched a fighting 52-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Dinesh Karthik. Yadav was the main aggressor of the gritty stand and scored the majority of the runs. Left-arm pacer Wayne Parnell then brought an end to Karthik’s struggling knock as he struck in the 16th over to provide his side with a much-needed breakthrough. The wicketkeeper batter could s...

PERTH: Pakistan bowlers displayed a combined effort to reduce the Netherlands to a paltry 91/9 in the first innings of the 29th match of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. Shadab Khan led the charge for the Green Shirt as he returned sensational figures of 3/22 in his four overs quota. Opting to bat first, Netherlands batters showcased a dismal batting performance as eight of their batters failed to enter into double figures. PERTH: Pakistan will resume their expedition for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal berth today as they take on Zimbabwe in one of the three Super 12s Group 2 matches today at Optus Stadium here. Pakistan, fresh from the anguishment of witnessing the vital two points slipping away on Sunday when they collided with arch-rivals India at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, would be concerned about the thrashing they received from South Africa a day later, but also relieved to have come away with a point. Pakistan’s frustrating defeat at the hands of India raised concerns about whether the team should have gone with four pacers and one spinner, which might result in them bringing Mohammad Wasim Jr into the lineup. It is, however, more likely that the team would still recruit both their full-time spinners Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz in the Playing XI, whereas, the inclusion of a pacer can allow Babar Azam to have more options in the bowling department. Zimbabwe coach slams umpires for not halting play despite wet outfield

HOBART: Zimbabwe coach Dave Houghton has slammed the umpires’ decision to continue with his team’s game against South Africa on Monday despite the heavy amount of rain in Hobart. Rain played a spoiler in yesterday’s match on multiple instances before it was finally abandoned with South Africa close to sealing a victory. The Proteas required just 13 runs in 24 balls and had 10 wickets in hands but since the innings had not reached the mandatory cut-off mark of five overs, the game ended with no result. Zimbabwe’s bowlers and fielders frequently voiced their displeasure about the damp outfield during the chase as the rain gradually grew heavier. However, the umpires kept the players in the game even after fast bowler Richard Ngarava slipped and had to be taken off the field injured. “I don’t think we should have even bowled a ball, to be fair,” said Houghton in a post-match press conference. “But the umpires are the guys making those decisions out in the middle and they seemed to thi...

Zimbabwean all-rounder scripted an astonishing fight for his team after a dreadful start and bolstered the side to put on a commendable total after the contest was reduced to nine overs per side. Batting first, Zimbabwe suffered an enthralling attack from the South African pace attack which halted them to 19/4 in the fourth over. Following the slump, Madhevere and Milton Shumba stitched a valiant fifth-wicket partnership and added 60 runs in just 32 deliveries. Shumba who played the anchoring role with a 20-ball 18 fell on the final delivery of the innings to Anrich Nortje. Madhevere, on the other hand, top-scored for Zimbabwe with an unbeaten 35 off just 18 balls with the help of four boundaries and a six. Lungi Ngidi led the South African bowling attack with two wicke...

Lopez powers Spain to seal FIFA U17 Women’s WC semifinals berth

MARGAO: Vicky Lopez’s twin late strikes lifted defending champions Spain from 0-1 down to a comprehensive 2-1 victory over Japan in the fourth quarterfinal to book a semifinal spot in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup 2022. The exciting quarterfinal between the two teams remained equally balanced in the first half despite some close attempts from both ends. Spain, however, spoiled the opportunity to claim an early lead as Carla Camacho missed the penalty in the 37th minute following a foul by Toko Koga. Japan took the field with greater determination in the second half and launched the attack on the Spanish defence. The domination soon turned into a goal when Momoko Tanikawa hit a long-range stunner to hand her side an early lead. The defending champions held their nerves calm despite the deficit and kept attacking on the counter. Lopez then neutralized Japan’s lead – following a melee in the penalty box – with a perfectly targeted strike. Spain’s counterattack left Japan panicking ...

Verstappen holds on Hamilton to win US GP as Red Bull claim constructors’ crown

TEXAS: Red Bull’s Max Verstappen bounced back from a slow pitstop to win the United States (US) Grand Prix here on Sunday and powered his team to clinch the Formula One constructors’ title. Verstappen, however, reeled him with seven laps to spare and went on to win the sprint. Ferrari, on the other hand, needed to outperform Red Bull by 19 points in US GP to keep constructors’ crown hopes alive, but Charles Leclerc was the only finisher for the team after battling his way up from 12th on the grid to finish third. Teammate Carlos Sainz, who started on the pole position, had to retire in the first lap after a devastating collision with Mercedes’ George Russell. Consequently, Red Bull now have unassailable 656 points to Ferrar...

Curran, however, dampened their efforts as he castled Ghani in the 12th over to break the budding partnership. Ibrahim remained the top-scorer for Afghanistan as he scored a run-a-ball 32. Following his dismissal, Afghanistan then ran into a frustrating collapse and could not recover. Usman, who was the other notable run-getter also walked back in the final over.
