KL Rahul to lead India in ODI series against South Africa

PM Khan approves construction of stadium in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan approved the construction of a cricket stadium here which will be completed by 2025 as assured by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja. In a high-profile meeting on Friday, PCB’s patron discussed planning to construct a stadium in Islamabad as soon as possible. DUBLIN: Two members of Ireland’s squad for the West Indies tour – Paul Stirling and Shane Getkate tested positive for the COVID-19, Cricket Ireland reported on Thursday. In a press release, Cricket Ireland reported that the Irish squad, flying from Florida to Jamaica, dented by the COVID-19 outbreak in the camp. Stirling and Getkate, after contracting the virus, have isolated themselves. The contracted players will join the squad in Jamaica after the completion of the mandatory quarantine period. Another member, George Dockrell, cleared to travel; after returning a false negative. ICC announces nominations for ‘Women’s T20I Player of 2021’

DUBAI: International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the nominees for the ‘ICC Women’s T20I Player of 2021’, India’s Smriti Mandhana included. In a press release, ICC nominated India’s batter – Mandhana, Irish batter Gaby Lewis, English batter Tammy Beaumont, and her teammate, Nat Sciver. ICC nominated the four cricketers, following their eye-catching performance in the running year. Performance Smriti Mandhana: 255 runs in nine matches at 31.87 with two half-centuries. Gaby Lewis:  325 runs at 40.62 in 10 contests with a strike rate of 128.45; including one century and a half-century. Tammy Beaumont:  303 runs in nine matches at an average of 33.66 with three half-centuries. COVID-19 keeps denting England’s camp during The Ashes

MELBOURNE: England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) informed that the seventh COVID-19 positive case was reported in their camp during The Ashes.  England’s head coach Chris Silverwood has been sent to isolation for 10 days after one of his family members was tested positive for the virus. Earlier, three support staff and four family members were tested positive for COVID-19 in the PCR testing regime since Monday 27 December. Assistant coach Graham Thorpe will take Silverwood’s place in the fourth Test, starting from January 5 in Sydney. Meanwhile, the match referee David Boon has also contracted the virus and will miss the upcoming fourth Test between the arch-rivals. It must be noted here that Australia has already lost five-match series 3-0, with two matches to go. DUBAI: Pakistani skipper Babar Azam has been nominated for International Cricket Council (ICC) ODI Player of the Year 2021.  Taking to Twitter, ICC shared nominations for ODI player of the year. Alongside Babar, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, South Africa’s Janeman Malan and Ireland’s Paul Stirling got their place in the nomination. NCOC allows PCB to host full capacity crowd during PSL 7

LAHORE: National Command Operation Center (NCOC) allowed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to host full crowd during the upcoming edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL). As per the NCOC guidelines, only vaccinated spectators would be able to enter the stadium during the league. Spectators and organizers must strictly follow precautionary measures; wearing masks and social distancing must be maintained. The seventh edition of the PSL will take place from January 27 to February 27. The event’s 34 matches are set to take place in two legs at Karachi’s National Stadium and Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, respectively. If the COVID-19 cases arouse across the country, the NCOC will review the decision in the third week of January. Virat goes century-less in second consecutive year

CENTURION: India’s Test skipper – Virat Kohli, went century-less for the first time in two consecutive years, since his international debut. In his last inning of the ongoing year, today, Kohli dismissed for just 18 in the second inning of the first Test against South Africa; ending the year with the century-drought. In 2021, the batter scored 536 runs at 28.21; scoring just four fifties. Since the start of the previous year, India’s premium batter, Kohli, has struggled to score big with the bat. Kohli has been unable to reach the three-figure mark since his last international century, his 70th, in November 2019 against Bangladesh. The batter was unable to score an international century in any format in the years 2020 and 2021. The 33-years-old saw his peak in the 2017-18 period; scoring 11 centuries in each year. KARACHI: The Queen’s Baton of the 2022 Commonwealth Games, entered final stage of its tour of Pakistan, after the baton unveiled at Lyari Kakri Ground. An event was held at the famous Kakri Football Ground in Lyari for the unveiling of the baton. Deputy British High Commissioner, Martin Dawson, specially participated in the ceremony. DUBAI: Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan has been nominated for International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s T20I player of the year.  With his eye-catching performance in the shorter format in 2021, Rizwan registered himself as the highest T20I run-scorer in a calendar year. He scored 1326 runs in 29 matches at an average of 73.66 with one century. Alongside Rizwan, England’s Jos Buttler, Sri Lanka’s Wahindu Hasaranga and Australia’s Mitchell Marsh. Sindh Schools Cricket League to kickoff in February: PCB

KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) joint hands with the Sindh Government to launch Schools Cricket League in the province. As per the reports, the PCB, set to launch the league in February, in which a total of 3850 players will be participating. Initially, 239 matches will be played in the first phase of the league. The matches will be held in 30 different regions of the province. With the end of the first phase, the best 30 teams will then compete in 24 matches. Out of which, the top six teams will then participate in the Sindh Championship. Babar becomes only batter to end a year as top batsman thrice

KARACHI: Pakistan’s skipper and the current number 1 ODI and T20I batter, Babar Azam became the only batter to finish a year as the best T20I batter, thrice. After having a fantastic year in T20Is, Pakistan’s captain – Babar, claimed a unique record to his name. The batter became the only batsman to top the ICC T20I batting rankings thrice at the end of each year. Babar, who finished the years 2018, 19, and 21 as the top T20I batter, broke the record of his Indian and Australian counterparts, Virat Kohli and Aaron Finch respectively. Sydney Thunder push Perth Scorchers to their first defeat in BBL

CANBERRA: Sam Billings’ brilliance helped Sydney Thunder beat Perth Scorchers by 34 runs; handing the Scorchers their first defeat in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL). Chasing 201, in the 24th match of the BBL, the Scorchers’ batters failed to get their side over the line. The side had a poor start to their inning; losing the first three wickets for just 17 runs. The scorchers continued to lose wickets at a consistent pace, but, Colin Munro, on the other hand, showed fightback. The batter scored an unbeaten 64 off 43 balls, including six boundaries. WAPDA shuts down ‘Cricket Operations’

LAHORE: Water And Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has dissolved all cricket operations after seeing no hope for departmental cricket in Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s domestic set-up.  According to the details, WAPDA has called off its cricket operations and directed contracted players to resume their respective duties. As many as 21 cricketers are associated with WAPDA. Some prominent cricketers include Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif, Wahab Riaz, and Kamran Akmal. All the players will have to join their duties as per the order. It must be noted here that PCB dissolved departmental cricket on the directives of current Prime Minister and former Test captain Imran Khan. The domestic structure was transformed into regions. BCCI President Ganguly tested COVID-19 positive

DEHLI: Board for Cricket Control in India (BCCI)’s president Sourav Ganguly has been tested COVID-19 positive, Indian media reported.  According to the reports, Ganguly had a mild fever on Sunday after which a precautionary COVID-19 test was conducted. The result returned positive and it forced Ganguly to get hospitalized on late Monday. Reports further state that the condition of the BCCI president is stable but he will remain in strict observation for the next few days. It must be noted here that Ganguly had angioplasty twice earlier this year in January. He was treated at a local hospital where two stents had been placed in his heart. SJAS honors Shahnawaz Dahani with Gold Medal

KARACHI: Rookie pacer Shahnawaz Dahani was honored by a Gold Medal from the Sports Journalist Association of Sindh (SJAS) for his commendable rose to success in the international cricket arena.  In a ceremony conducted here on Friday, the young pacer was awarded a Gold medal for his achievements so far in the cricket field. Sindh Minister for Labour and Human Resources, Saeed Ghani presented the medal to Dahani meanwhile also praised him for his outstanding performance. “I hope Shahnawaz Dahani will continue to serve the country with pride and make Pakistan proud,” he said at the juncture. ‘Babar as captain proved me wrong’ Shahid Afridi

KARACHI: Pakistan’s former captain, Shahid Afridi praised Babar Azam’s performance as a captain while speaking to a local channel. The former all-rounder disclosed that he was afraid that the additional responsibility might halt the individual performance of Babar. “I was concerned that Babar would be put under a lot of stress. The captaincy of the Pakistani squad is a big deal. As captain, you must deal with the media as well as the players,” Afridi said. The all-rounder, however, admitted that the star batter proved his concerns wrong and is leading the side well. “I had my doubts about Babar’s ability to lead the team. But, with his performance as captain, he has proven me wrong,” he concluded. KARACHI: Former international all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi disclosed that he wasn’t in favour of Shaheen Shah Afridi taking up the captain’s role.  Speaking to a local tv channel, Shahid shared his suggestions to Shaheen before he took up the captaincy of Lahore Qalandars for Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 7. “I had suggested Shaheen wait for a year or two before accepting captaincy. As his bowling career is more important. But, he is also an Afridi, he didn’t listen to me,” Afridi was quoted saying. Sri Lanka crush Kuwait in U19 Asia Cup

SHARJAH: Sri Lanka outclassed Kuwait in both departments; crushing the side with a huge 274 runs to start their Under-19 Asia Cup with a victory. In the only Group-B match, Sri Lankan batters started well; scoring 323/5 in the first inning, then bowled out their opposition for a mere 49 runs. Batting first, Sri Lankan openers provided a solid start to the innings. The duo added a 91-runs partnership. Both the openers, Chamindu Wickramasinghe and Shevon Daniel scored 54 each.
