Pat Cummins sees Australia to thrilling win in Ashes opener

Australia captain Pat Cummins led his side to a dramatic two-wicket win over England in the first Test at Edgbaston on Tuesday. The Ashes holders were 209-7, still 72 runs shy of a victory target of 281, when fast bowler Pat Cummins came in to bat after first-innings century-maker Usman Khawaja fell for a painstaking 65. And after Alex Carey was out to leave Australia 227-8, the tourists still required another 54 more runs. But Cummins and Nathan Lyon’s unbroken stand of 55 saw Australia home in a match to rival the tension of England’s two-run win in a celebrated 2005 Ashes clash at Edgbaston. Pat Cummins, who finished on 44 not out, hit the winning boundary when he edged Ollie Robinson to third man where a diving Harry Brook knocked the ball over the rope. Lyon, whose missed run out contributed to England’s stunning one-wicket win at Headingley in the drawn 2019 Ashes series in England, was 16 not out. The victory left World Test champions Australia 1-0 up in the five-match se...

Sikandar Raza lifts Zimbabwe to crush Netherlands in CWC Qualifier

HARARE: Sikandar Raza followed up his sensational four-for with a record century and powered Zimbabwe to thrash Netherlands by six wickets in the Cricket World Cup (CWC) Qualifier. Sikandar Raza was the hero of Zimbabwe’s dominant six-wicket victory over the Netherlands as the home side chased down a mammoth 316-run target in just the 41st over for the loss of four wickets. Earlier, Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine sent the Netherlands into bat first after the coin flipped in his favour. The Netherlands had apparently made him pay for his decision to field first as the Dutch side piled up a massive 315/6 total on the scoreboard with openers Vikramjit Singh and Max O’Dowd and skipper Scott Edwards leading the charge with half-centuries. Dutch batters annihilated Zimbabwe bowlers in the first innings as most of them went for plenty but Sikandar Raza remained the exception as he returned with sensational figures of 4/55 in his 10 overs to bar the opposition from amassing a more daunting ...

Cant rule out Haroon on Sarfaraz Ahmeds inclusion for WC

LAHORE: Pakistan men’s cricket team’s Chief Selector Haroon Rasheed on Tuesday opened up regarding the possibility of Sarfaraz Ahmed’s inclusion in the squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s World Cup in India this year. Although Sarfaraz Ahmed has proved his mettle in the Test format after making a remarkable comeback to the format in December, Chief Selector Haroon Rasheed insisted that his performance in the shorter format needs to be evaluated. “As far as Sarfaraz Ahmed is concerned, he has given outstanding performance in Test cricket, there is no doubt about it, and that’s why you see him in the Test squad. But talking about his performance in One-Day and shorter formats, it is obviously premature,” said Rasheed in an interview with a local media outlet here. Haroon Rasheed however pointed out that there is still plenty of time for evaluations and considerations and that no player should be written off at this point. He added that each player’s skills and shortcomings will be caref...
