Asia Cup defending champs Sri Lanka unfazed by injuries

Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka said on Wednesday the defending champions will challenge every team in the Asia Cup despite injuries to several key players. Sri Lanka, co-hosting the tournament with Pakistan, face Bangladesh on Thursday after injuries forced them to drop two key players at the last minute. They won the tournament in the T20 format last year but it reverts to the ODI format as a prelude to the 50-over World Cup in India, which starts on October 5. “We are playing in our backyard, so have the home advantage,” Shanaka told reporters in Pallekele. “There are a few players not participating due to injury but still I think we have got a pretty good side who can challenge all the teams.” Leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and fast-bowler Dushmantha Chameera will sit out the tournament after being named in the original 15-member squad but Shanaka said his team remained confident. “There is no pressure at all,” he said. Sri Lanka were underdogs at the previous Asia Cup in Dub...

England’s women cricketers awarded match fee parity with men

England’s women cricketers will be paid the same match fees as their male counterparts, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced on Wednesday. The pay increase, which follows similar moves in New Zealand and India, will take effect immediately, beginning with the Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka, which starts on Thursday. The change was recommended by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket report in June, which said “women receive an embarrassingly small amount compared to men”. The report said match fees for the England women’s team were a quarter of those paid to the men’s team for white-ball games while the figure was just 15 percent for Tests. ECB chief executive officer Richard Gould said the recent “thrilling” Ashes series against Australia, watched by record-breaking crowds, showed the growing popularity of the women’s game. “We all want cricket to be the team sport of choice for female athletes and — with the investments we are making and increasingly l...

Messi comes off bench to score as Inter Miami win at Red Bulls

Lionel Messi came off the bench and scored as Inter Miami began their push for the Major League Soccer playoffs with a 2-0 win at New York Red Bulls on Saturday. The Argentine World Cup winner had limited involvement after entering with former Barcelona team-mate Sergio Busquets but made his mark on his regular season debut with an 89th-minute goal. Jordi Alba acrobatically hooked the ball into the box to Messi who twisted and turned then slipped a sublime pass with the outside of his foot to Benjamin Cremaschi whose low first-time cross was tapped in by the seven-times Ballon d’Or winner.
