Pacers shine as Pakistan U19 dominate Bangladesh on day one

After being put into bat by Saad Baig, the bowlers made sure they extract the best from the pitch which offered assistance to fast bowlers in the morning session. The home side top-order batters had no clue to face Amir and Ismail as their five batters were back to the pavillion inside 10 overs with 21 runs on the board. That Bangladesh U19 were able to score 149 was due to an 81-run partnership for the sixth wicket between captain Sharear Sakib and Sheikh Parvaiz Jibon. PAK vs NZ: Fakhar credits Babar Azam for his marathon innings

RAWALPINDI: Imperious Fakhar Zaman has credited skipper Babar Azam for his longer stays on the crease helping him to finish the job for his team after he led  Pakistan to a convincing win in the second match of the PAK vs NZ ODI series. The left-hander played a match-winning knock of 180 not out to help his side chase down the massive 337-run target in the second ODI against New Zealand at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday. It was the second-highest run chase by the Men in Green in ODI history. Pakistan star opener disclosed that he was able to bat till the last because of Babar’s time-to-time interventions to calm his nerves. “After every over Babar was sending me a message to stand (solid) and not to go hard,” he said in a post-match interview. “Even when he was batting (with me), he never asked me to go for runs. He was just asking to take singles and double, and if needed he himself would take the risk.” Moreover, Fakhar said the skipper tried his best to keep him u...

New Zealand not ready to leave Williamson out of World Cup at any cost

RAWALPINDI: New Zealand veteran Kane Williamson would not be left out of the ICC ODI World Cup later this year as the Blackcaps management considers roping him in a mentoring role if he will not be completely fit to play the megaevent. New Zealand head coach Gary Stead has refused to rule out Williamson from the BlackCaps World Cup squad as yet, hoping the injured batter would make a full recovery before the tournament. Williamson ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee while fielding for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League match earlier this month and underwent surgery. Typically, the injury takes around six-month rehabilitation, which means the Blackcaps regular captain will be in a tight spot ahead of the megaevent in terms of proving his fitness. Speaking in a press conference ahead of the five-game PAK vs NZ ODI series , Stead provided an update on Williamsons’ fitness, saying, his surgery had gone well and he would be given ample to recover fully. ...

Man City rout Arsenal to seize title momentum, Chelsea crash again

LONDON: Manchester City seized control of the Premier League title race as Kevin De Bruyne inspired a crucial 4-1 rout of crumbling leaders Arsenal on Wednesday. De Bruyne scored twice and set up John Stones’ goal before Erling Haaland capped the demolition at the Etihad Stadium as City showed why they have been champions four times in the last five seasons. Pep Guardiola’s side have trailed unexpected pace-setters Arsenal for much of the campaign, but the Gunners have choked over the last month while battle-hardened City show no signs of being affected by the pressure. Second placed City are now just two points behind Arsenal with two games in hand. City will become champions for a third successive season if they win six of their last seven matches. Few would bet against them after a blistering run of seven consecutive league victories reeled in Arsenal. Unbeaten in their last 16 games in all competitions, City have won 13 of their past 14 games as they chase a remarkable treble...

Karunaratne, Madushka hit tons as Sri Lanka pile on runs

GALLE: Dimuth Karunaratne and Nishan Madushka both hit centuries as they amassed a record Sri Lankan opening stand in Galle of 228 in the second Test against Ireland on Wednesday. The hosts were 357 for one at the close, still 135 runs behind but with nine wickets in hand. Madushka was unbeaten on 149 at stumps, alongside Kusal Mendis, approaching a century of his own on 83, after Karunaratne departed for 115 — the only wicket to fall on the third day of the match. The first Test ended inside three days with Sri Lanka’s spinners dominating, but the pitch in the second encounter has offered the spinners little assistance and the batsmen dominated proceedings. Captain Karunaratne reached the 16th century of his test career, and his second consecutive ton, in just 116 balls. But the left-hander mistimed a pull shot off Curtis Campher and was caught at deep fine leg in the last over before lunch, two balls after he was hit on the helmet. Madushka had already brought up his maiden...

Ronnie O’Sullivan stunned out of World Snooker Championship

SHEFFIELD: Defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan succumbed to an astounding collapse as he was knocked out of the ongoing World Snooker Championship 2023 after a shocking 10-13 defeat at the hands of Luca Brecel. Reigning champion Ronnie O’Sullivan resumed his quarter-final clash with Luca Brecel with a solid 10-6 advantage only to lose seven consecutive frames from 10th-ranked Belgium’s cueist, who recorded a 13-10 victory at the Crucible. Briefly after heading into the final session, O’Sullivan made a costly error as he managed to miss a black off its place; allowing Brecel to benefit. In the following frame, The Rocket made another mistake that was met with a break of 64. Brecel then eventually managed to cut O’Sullivan’s lead to 10-9 before soon catching up with the seasoned cueist with a break of 72. After drawing level with O’Sullivan after the 20th frame, there was no stopping Brecel as he continued his domination with breaks of 66, 78 and 63 to claim a remarkable victory. ...

PAK vs NZ ODI: Imam eyes clean sweep to claim top spot in team rankings

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s left-handed opener Imam-ul-Haq, shared his goals for the upcoming PAK vs NZ five-match ODI series and expressed his wish to propel his side to the top spot in team rankings by beating New Zealand 5-0. Imam-ul-Haq, in the pre-series, press conference here on Wednesday, emphasized the significance of the team’s triumphs over personal rankings before asserting that the left-handed opener was not aiming for individual milestones but wanted his team to top the ODI rankings. “I do not have a plan for a personal record but as you know if we beat New Zealand 5-0 we will top the ODI rankings and I have always thought that it’s a team game,” said Imam. Imam continued by employing an example from his and Babar Azam’s individual rankings to argue that his rating is insignificant if his national team is not on the number one spot. “I am on third in individual batting rankings and Babar is at number one, but our team is not on number one spot, which is not a good thing to...

‘Best white ball cricketer in Pakistan’ Amir backs out-of-form Shadab Khan

Image
Fast bowler Mohammad Amir has thrown his support behind Shadab Khan following the all-rounder’s lacklustre performance in the recently-concluded PAK vs NZ T20I series. Shadab has been going through a purple patch since the last year’s T20 World Cup while his recent performances during the home T20I series against New Zealand came under severe criticism. Shadab took just three wickets in the five-game series and dropped a crucial catch in the final match which virtually cost the game to Pakistan. The all-rounder dropped Mark Chapman in the 14th over, who then went on to score a match-winning century to help Kiwis draw the series 2-2. However, Shadab’s teammates and fellow cricketers including Mohammad Amir came out in support of the out-of-form all-rounder amid a rough phase of his career.
