The Three Lions had already been relegated from the top tier of the Nations League and will head to Qatar on a six-game winless run. The knives were being sharpened for Southgate after his faith in Harry Maguire backfired for two German goals early in the second half. ‘No warnings were given’ Knight refutes Deepti’s claims

We couldn’t do much,” she was quoted as saying by the Indian media. ‘I had idea where to bowl Dawson’ Haris on match-winning 19th over

KARACHI: Fast bowler Haris Rauf disclosed that he had planned beforehand how to bowl Liam Dawson and other tail-enders in the 19th over and turn the game into Pakistan’s favour.  The right-arm pacer powered the Green Shirts to a thrilling win in the fourth T20I against England as he bowled a match-winning second-last over when the game was just slipping away from the hosts’ hand. Speaking to a post-match press conference, Haris revealed that he had started making plans in the 18th over, when Dawson was storming Mohammad Hasnain and scored 24 runs, that how he would be bowling to him in the next over. “I had an idea where to bowl him and obviously the target was to take his wicket at that moment and turn the game,” he said. “I had confidence that if I bowled my best deliveries to the tail-enders, we would win the match,” he added. England fell just three runs short in the final over, courtesy of a brilliant 19th over from Haris, who struck twice to remove the danger man Liam Da...

India captain defends controversial run-out to seal England sweep

LONDON: India captain Harmanpreet Kaur insisted her side had committed no “crime” after sealing victory over England at Lord’s on Saturday with a run-out at the non-striker’s end. England were eyeing a remarkable win in the third women’s one-day international when India bowler Deepti Sharma ran out non-striker Charlie Dean, who was well out of her ground. Dean’s 47, batting at number nine, had given England, who were 53-6, hope of chasing down a target of 170. Instead they were bowled out for 153 as India won by 16 runs to complete a 3-0 series sweep. An emotional Dean broke down in tears when her dismissal was confirmed before sportingly shaking hands with her opponents. Despite being allowed under cricket’s rules, running out a non-striker backing up has long been regarded as unsporting by many within the game. But it was only this week the International Cricket Council reiterated the dismissal, known as a “Mankad” after India’s Vinoo Mankad, who ran out Australia batsman Bill B...

PCB announces retainers for supplementary panel match officials

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed on Sunday as it introduced retainers for its Supplementary Panel match officials for the first time. As a result, each of the 23 match officials on the panel—15 umpires and 8 match referees—will be paid PKR25,000 every month throughout the 2022–23 season. The recent move guarantees that all 43 match officials on the PCB panel are now being taken care of by the game’s governing body in Pakistan. Previously, only match officials on the international and elite panel were on retainers. The match officials’ retainers on the elite and international panels are PKR69,575 and PKR132,250, respectively. During the cricket season, in addition to the retainers, the PCB also offers match fees (PKR 10,000 per day), daily allowances (PKR 2,500 per day), four- or five-star lodging (as available), as well as air and ground transportation, to its match officials. As a result, a match official’s income from a four-day match can reach PKR52,000, includ...

Swiss find holes in Spain defence in Nations League upset

ZARAGOZA: Switzerland earned a 2-1 win over Spain in the Nations League on Saturday in Zaragoza to drag Luis Enrique’s side off top spot in the group. Portugal thrashed the Czech Republic 4-0 in the other League A Group 2 clash to move two points clear of Spain, whom they host on Tuesday in the final group match. It was Spain’s first defeat in the group in five games, and one which exposed their defensive frailty from set-pieces. Manuel Akanji and Breel Embolo both scored from Switzerland corners, either side of Jordi Alba’s strike. “In two set-piece situations, which will be important at the World Cup, their goals arrived,” said Villarreal defender Pau Torres. “We have to improve on that.” Spain never looked comfortable in the game, a far cry from the team which reached the Euro 2020 semi-finals and were defeated on penalties by Italy. As a result, they stumbled to their first loss on home soil since 2018, after 22 matches unbeaten. Luis Enrique selected six Barcelona players ...

PCB BoG increases retainers, match fees in latest domestic contracts

Image
LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced to increase in the retainers and match fees in the domestic contracts 2022-23, approved by the Board of Governors (BoG) at its 70 th  meeting on Saturday. According to the PCB, the contracts will run from September 2022 to August 2023 and the list of player names will be revealed in due course. Following Ramiz Raja’s announcement of a PKR100,000 rise in retainers across all five categories following his election as the 34th PCB Chairman last September, the cricket board has again increased domestic retainers. The most significant difference, however, is in the match fees, which have been enhanced with the goal of luring star cricketers and pushing them to maintain high standards so that they may remain in the domestic contract categories. As a result, the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match fee has been raised from PKR60,000 to PKR100,000, while the Pakistan Cup and National T20 match fees have been hiked from PKR40,000 to PKR60,000, res...
